Barga - The Place

Porta Reale

Barga was an ancient castle of Longobard Origin surrounded by a wall with three Entrances. Barga since 1341 belonged to the Florentine state and followed the rulings of Florence until 1859. To day the city is split into two distinct areas-Barga Vecchia and Barga Giardino.
Barga Vecchia is still within the old walls of the city and although the three entrances remain the main and most picturesque is Porta Reale. A maze of small roads and steep stairways abounding in many small Piazzas some of Which play host to the most beautifull Buildings. In Piazza Angelio there is a 17th century Theatre - Teatro del Differenti where the Opera Barga Festival is also held And where in July and August a Jazz Festival is also held. Small artisan shops abound and artists, famous as well as the not so famous, have their exhibitions. The Duomo dedicated to St Christopher stands at the peek of the old city and all roads and pathways seem to lead there.
